Our college is proud to introduce an innovative ‘Modular Course on Women’s Empowerment, Gender Equity, Women’s Dignity, and Safety Measures’, aimed at fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. This course is designed to sensitize and empower young minds by addressing critical topics such as gender equality, women’s rights, personal safety, and the significance of dignity for all individuals. The programme aspires to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to challenge stereotypes, promote respect, and create a safer environment within and beyond the campus through interactive sessions, practical workshops, and expert-led discussions. This initiative reaffirms our commitment to nurturing socially responsible citizens who contribute positively to advancing gender equity and women’s empowerment.

  • To create an inclusive environment for women, free from violence and discrimination, and promote women’s dignity and social harmony.
  • To inculcate life skills among both genders leading to gender equity, mutual understanding, responsible and sensible behavioural patterns, and leadership among the women.
  • To foster core competencies to empower and mainstream women to enhance their contribution to national development.
  • To strengthen the collaborations with GOs, and NGOs working for the women’s cause by conducting joint training/orientation programmes, seminars, and workshops through collaborative arrangements.

Module 1: An Introduction to Women’s Movement and Organizations

  • A Brief History of Women’s Movement in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries
  • Post-Independence Period: Women’s Movements and Women in Social Movements
  • Rise of NGO Sector: Self-Help Groups, Gender Planning and Gender Strategies
  • Different Reports, Policies, Programmes and Commissions for Women
  • N. Conferences on Women: A Global Perspective
  • Understanding Patriarchy, Caste and Social Construction of Gender in India: Focus on Family, Religion and Media

Skill Building: Reading and analysing statistical reports/Summarizing reports, and policy recommendations/Preparing resource lists, Understanding processes and procedures of campaign building/ Workshop on Gender Mainstreaming

Module 2: Empowerment of Women

  • Education: Equal Access and Gender Sensitive Curricula (Biographies of some knowledge-making women)
  • Health: Health Services, Nutrition, Reproductive Health, Critical Issues in Mental Health, Disability and HIV/AIDS
  • Girl Child: Pre-natal Sex Selection, Child Marriage, Child Abuse, Child Labour and Rights of the Girl Child
  • Violence against Women: No Right to say No, Sexual Violence, Domestic violence, Caste and Communal Violence
  • Women’s safety and measures to curb violence against women
  • Environment: Issues of Livelihood, Shelter, Water and Sanitation

Skill Building: Documenting inequalities through quantitative methods and local surveys

Module 3: Women, Labour and the Economy

  • Concept of Work, Domestic Work
  • Women in Agriculture and Industry
  • Understanding Women in the Informal Sector
  • Gender and Development: Promoting Alternative Visions on gender equality, dignity of women and mainstreaming of women in national development.

Skill Building: Writing press notes, newspaper features, blogs etc.

Module 4: Women, Law and Politics

  • Immunity, privileges and Guarantees enshrined by the constitution, Laws concerning Women and Family Laws
  • Legal Campaigns and Changes: Efforts of Women’s Organizations and Judiciary with Special Focus on Curbing Violence, Abetment
  • Human Values and Human Rights
  • Understanding Local Self-Government Bodies and Women’s Participation, Roles, and Reservations for Women

Skill Building: Preparing small handbills, speeches, posters, skits, and role-plays to democratize knowledge of the law to diverse groups

Any student pursuing graduation irrespective of Gender/faculty/discipline

The duration of the course is four weeks, and the certificate will be issued on successful completion of the course and attainment of the desired level of competencies and clubbed course-work.
